Stroud Qualifies For U.S. Open; Tee Times Announced
June 5, 2008
Former Lamar men's golf All-America Chris Stroud was one of 21 players to emerge from 14 sectional qualifiers last week and will participate in the U.S. Open Championship, June 12-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, Calif. Stroud shot 65-69-134 and finished tied for sixth in the event in Cordova, Tenn. He will be paired with Ross McGowan of England and Ian Leggatt of Canada. The trio will tee off at 2:31 p.m. PDT off No. 10 on Thursday and at 9:01 a.m. PDT off No. 1 on Friday. The event will be Stroud's second appearance in the U.S. Open after missing the cut in last year's championship. This week he is playing in the Stanford St. Jude Championship at the TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn. Former LU standouts Casey Clendenon and Dawie Van Der Walt also competed in qualifiers in Richmond, Texas and Columbus, Ohio, respectively, but were unable to advance. Clendenon shot 73-69-142 and was three shots shy of forcing a playoff for the final spot in his event. Van Der Walt shot an opening-round 68 before withdrawing.
