Filip Kanczula earned SLC Player of the Year honors

Kanczula Named SLC Men's Tennis Player of the Year

April 25, 2008

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University men's tennis team capped off the 2008 season with four players receiving post season honors, led by Filip Kanczula who was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year.

Kanczula, a senior from Wroclaw, Poland, was voted the 2008 Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year after earning first team honors at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles with partner Maciej Bogusz. He finished the year with a 4-2 record in SLC play and an overall record of 10-11 al at the No. 1 position. Kanczula, the 2006 SLC Newcomer of the Year, is the second Cardinal to win player of the year honors, joining Jakob Paulsen in 2003, as he posted a 4-2 record at No. 1 singles in league play.

As a pair, he and Bogusz posted a 5-1 record in Southland Conference play and a 15-4 overall record on the year. The duo earned a national ranking as high as No. 25 during the season, after picking up victories over highly ranked opponents. This is the first time Bogusz, a junior from Wroclaw, Poland, has received a post season honor from the SLC.

The doubles tandem of Mario Janjic and David Wanja were selected to the third team after going 4-1 in conference play. For the year they went 5-4 in doubles action. This is the second time to be honored by the SLC for both players. Last year Wanja, a senior from Katy, Texas, earned second team all-conference at No. 4 singles and Janjic, a junior from Split, Croatia, was named to the second team in doubles play with partner Andres Medina.
