Post Play leads Lamar to 68-51 Win over Prairie View A&M
Dec. 15, 2005 PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas - Led by dominant post play by Shaquita Coffey, Audrea Samuel and Chelsea Gugliotta, the Lamar Lady Cardinals picked up their first road victory of the 2005-06 season, a 68-51 win over the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers at the William Nicks Building in Prairie View. Coffey had a breakout game for the Lady Cardinals, posting the first double-double of the year for Lamar with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Lamar struggled to fin a rhythm in the opening minutes of the game, but after they grabbed a lead midway through the opening period, they never looked back. Samuel spurred the Lady Cardinal offense in the first half, pouring in 14 first half points on six of nine shooting from the field. Despite her prowess in the paint, she started Lamar's scoring by draining a three pointer in the opening minute of the ballgame. In the second half Coffey and Gugliotta took control of the game in the post, as the Lady Panthers had no answer for the two down low. Coffey scored eight points and grabbed nine boards in 12 minutes of the second half, while Gugliotta picked up four points and four rebounds. The strong play of the three Lady Cards in the post helped Lamar stretch a 10-point lead into an 18-point margin with four minutes to play. Adding to Coffey's double-double was Samuel who ended the game with 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Lamar, while Gugliotta missed a double-double by one rebound finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds. The win is the second straight for LU, who picked up a 78-42 win over William Carey on Monday night. The Lady Cardinals (3-4) will be in action again Saturday afternoon when they take on the Rams of Huston Tillotson at 3 p.m. at the Montagne Center.
