Lady Cardinals Move Into Second At SLC Golf Tournament
April 22, 2008
Live Scoring! - Lamar tees off at 9:30 am CT
Lamar posted the low round of the day at 299 and trails Texas State by four shots after the second round of the 2008 Southland Conference Championship at Beaumont Country Club. Lamar entered the day in third place and five shots back of the Bobcats before turning in the only sub-300 score of the first two days. The Lady Cardinals cut the margin to four at the turn and were down by five entering the final hole before the Bobcats played 18 one shot higher, including a double-bogey by Linn Gustafsson. The Texas State freshman leads the field at 71-72--143, one-over-par. Senior Hillary Zeigler shot one-over 72 on Tuesday and finished with nine-consecutive pars after birdying the par-5 ninth. She is in sixth place at 149. Linda Persson is nine-over for the championship after a second-round 74 put her in a tie for seventh at 151. Therese Nilsson is the third LU player in the top-10 with a 36-hole total of 76-76--152 at tenth. Channing Norton is tied for 14th at 75-79--154 and Bonnie Howard is tied for 18th at 78-77--155. Gustafsson leads the 40-play field by five strokes over four golfers but had a chance to put the race for medalist honors out of reach on Tuesday. She stood at three-under for the tournament following consecutive birdies at 10 and 11, but double-bogeyed 12 and bogeyed 13 to fall back to even. She then finished birdie-double bogey. Laura Baker of UTSA, Lacy McKinley of McNeese State, Nicole Forshner of Central Arkansas and Sehee Kim of Texas State are the quartet tied for second at 148.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Nicholls State will be paired together for the first five groups from 8:00-8:32 a.m., followed by UTSA, Central Arkansas and McNeese State from 8:40-9:20 a.m., with Lamar, Texas State and Sam Houston State from 9:30-10:10 a.m. The final pairing of LU, Texas State and SHSU are the only three schools to have won SLC women's golf titles. Texas State won the first crown in 2002 - the only other time the championship was played at Beaumont CC, Lamar took first in 2003, 2005 and 2006, with SHSU winning in 2004 and 2007. |
