Lamar Volleyball Releases 2008 Schedule

BEAUMONT, Texas - Looking to build on the success from the 2007 season, head coach Justin Gibert released the 2008 schedule for the Lamar University volleyball team on Thursday. The schedule features 11 home contests and 19 road matches including four tournaments to start the season. The first 11 matches of the season will be on the road, before LU returns home for the Lady Cardinals Invitational to start play at McDonald Gym. The Lady Cardinals take the court for the first time on August 29, at 4 p.m. when they face Prairie View A&M at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas. The opening weekend will conclude with LU playing Baylor and former Lamar head coach Jim Barnes at 7:30 p.m. After traveling to tournaments at Wichita State (Wichita State, Cal State Bakersfield and Idaho State) and Arkansas (Tennessee-Martin, Arkansas and Virginia Tech), and playing the University of Houston on the road, the Lady Cardinals will open the home schedule by hosting their home tournament. The four team tournament will feature Lamar, Louisiana Lafayette, UT-Pan American and Texas Tech. The Lady Cards begin their home tournament with a 7 p.m. showdown with Louisiana Lafayette on Friday night before playing a pair of matches on Saturday. Lamar will begin the second day with a 1 p.m. contest against UTPA and close out the tournament with a 7 p.m. match against Texas Tech. The Southland Conference schedule begins on Sept. 27 with Lamar hosting Sam Houston State at 3 p.m. The 16 match SLC schedule will wrap up with a pair of matches on the weekend of November 14 and 15 with LU hosting Northwestern State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Central Arkansas on Saturday at 3 p.m. "We are extremely happy with our schedule for the 2008 season," Gibert said. "The four tournaments we have early in the season have a great balance in competition. We expect to see strong competition early on, including teams from the Big 12 and SEC, as well as be able to build some strong momentum going into conference play. Having our tournament at home directly before conference play will be an excellent time to play in front of our fans and showcase our team."
Last season the Lady Cardinals posted an overall record of 25-9, going 15-1 in Southland Conference play and tying for the league championship. |
